There are so many different website builders out there, and everyone has a different opinion on which one is "best"! Some say Squarespace is best, others will tell you WordPress is the only way to go. My favorite?  Definitely Showit.  Considering a switch to a new website builder?  Let's compare Showit vs Squarespace.

Which website builder is right for YOUR specific business needs? That’s exactly what this blog post is for, friend! In this article, I’m comparing in the most basic terms:

When I have clients and customers who are switching to Showit from another software, about 80% of the time, they're coming from Squarespace.

It's a common switch! With that said, if you’re expecting me to bash Squarespace, I WON’T BE! I have nothing against Squarespace, and I think it’s a great alternative to Showit. Do I think Showit is better in many cases? Yes. Do I think Squarespace is the worst website platform ever? Definitely not!

Showit versus Squarespace, comparison of Squarespace and Showit website builders

Background On My Experience with Squarespace and Showit

I did the math, and back in 2018, 60% of my 1:1 clients were switching from Squarespace to Showit.

Yep, switching TO Showit. Why? A lot of reasons… some of them were fed up with the limitations of Squarespace and wanted to be able to REALLY customize their websites, and others really loved the creativity Showit allowed.

I’ve designed on Squarespace before (I’ve actually built 2 old websites on the platform), so I’m definitely familiar with it.

As soon as I started using Showit, though, I loved it.  At the end of 2017, I started designing websites exclusively on Showit, because I believe in it THAT MUCH. And, all my website templates are exclusive to the Showit platform too.

So, let's dive into a comparison of Squarespace and Showit!

Showit designer comparing Showit vs Squarespace

Showit vs Squarespace: How are Showit and Squarespace similar?

1. They both are website builders that also host your website.

They are very similar in this way. Each platform hosts your website and provides you with an interface where you can build the site out. This means you pay them to be your host, whereas, with something like a WordPress-hosted website, you actually have to pay an outside host of your choice to “host” it.

2. Both have plenty of templates to choose from.

Both platforms have MANY companies selling templates, both inside their website and externally. All you have to do is a quick Google search for your niche and that website builder and you’ll find all sorts of templates!

3. Both have dedicated support staff.

These both have in-house support staff to help you with your support needs. This might sound obvious, but there are other platforms that do not have any support assistance.

As you can see, they definitely have their similarities, but you’ll quickly find that Showit allows more creative control and is easier to use. Showit also integrates with WordPress for blogging, which puts it over the top in the blogging game. If you want to know WHY I love WordPress but don’t love it for your hosting and website builder, read this post! Because with Showit, you DO use WordPress still for the blogging side of things!

How using Showit is different from other website builders

Showit vs Squarespace: How are Showit and Squarespace different?

1. Showit is easier to use (and more intuitive) than Squarespace.

In Showit, you can “drag and drop.” And honestly, I don’t even know if “drag and drop” is the best term here! Because you aren’t dragging stuff into a super stringent template where stuff has to go. You can literally do whatever you want. There is so much creative freedom. I have worked with so many people who switch to Showit after being uber frustrated by how little they can control their Squarespace website.

Squarespace works with modules that are fairly easy to edit, but you cannot customize everything. In Squarespace, you are more tied to the template design. In Showit, you could literally buy one of my templates and make it look like something COMPLETELY different in the end! The template doesn’t hold you back.

As an example, my client Well-Watered Women switched to Showit from Squarespace to work with me for a custom design. Here’s what Gretchen, the founder, had to say about the switch:

We have been working with Squarespace for several years now and came to a point where the site design was too limited for what we needed. When Elizabeth suggested moving to Showit we trusted that it would be the best move for our company and have loved working with the new platform! Showit has been able to expand our hosting and designing options and offer us what we need! We are excited to use them!"

It is EASIER and more intuitive to use. And, with my templates, I take it a step further and give you an online course to teach you how to use Showit. You get an actual online course on this FOR FREE! The course videos are short, sweet, and to the point. You’ll watch the introduction/overview videos to get rolling, and then after that, you watch what you need as you need it. This helps prevent the overwhelm that comes with a new platform and any difficulties that come with learning something new. I’ll be there to teach you and support you!

2. You can customize the mobile experience separately in Showit... making for a better user experience.

On Showit, you can customize your mobile website separately from your desktop website. All the items are still the same, but you can make both totally unique for that specific need.

This is incredible because sometimes you want less content (or slightly different content) on your mobile website. With Squarespace, things can look wonky on mobile, because you can only customize your desktop site. So images may crop to a weird spot or things may show up out of order. With over 63% of people regularly using phones to access your website, mobile is more important than ever! This is honestly one of my favorite features of Showit.

Website designer using Showit

3. With Showit, you can edit everything without coding.

Squarespace is COMPLETELY template-based, which is different than BUYING a template. For example, if you buy a template from me and customize it, you can literally change anything. You can completely change the layout, the colors, the fonts, the entire structure of the website very easily. But, with Squarespace, the changes you make HAVE TO fit into the template. This makes editing more challenging and everything less “custom”. When you think about using Showit, don’t think about being tied to a template, because you aren’t!

Showit blog example

4. How you blog on Showit versus Squarespace is super different!

Both platforms have blogging capabilities. But, Showit integrates with WordPress for blogging, so you can have the power and flexibility of WordPress with the design freedom of Showit. By blogging with WordPress, you open the doors to unlimited optimization potential, SEO capabilities, and more. Like I mentioned, with a template from EM Shop, you get an online course to teach you Showit. In this course, there’s an entire module just on WordPress. I cover all my favorite WordPress plugins to let you do really cool things on your website (again, not a feature of Squarespace), there’s a 30-minute training on doing SEO on your blog posts, a video on how to set up your blogs, and so much more!

So, if WordPress scares you,  don’t let it. You’ll love it. Seriously, everyone I know who gets to blog on WordPress while being hosted by Showit LOVES IT. It’s the bomb, and the online course is going to help you take your blogging game to the next level.

5. Squarespace has more e-commerce options than Showit.

Squarespace has more e-commerce capabilities built right in the platform than Showit. However, Showit can integrate e-commerce with ease.  If you have a lot of products to sell, Showit might not be the right platform for you (or at least not for the e-commerce side of your business).

But, even though Squarespace does e-commerce, if you have an actual e-commerce website (where that’s what you’re doing, you’re selling e-commerce) then I’d pick Shopify. Or, you can do an integration with companies like Kajabi, ThriveCart, Thinkific, or Shopify Lite!

For example, I have a client right now who did her main website on Showit, but her online courses and membership site are purchased through a ClickFunnels sales page that’s clicked to from the Showit website. It’s awesome, it’s the best of both worlds! So, don’t stick with Squarespace just because they offer e-commerce built-in, there are other ways to do it that work even better.

Showit is great for SEO testimonial

6. Showit has amazing SEO capabilities!

Squarespace’s SEO capabilities are VERY limited. It’s actually quite frustrating. You’re likely going to have a harder time getting found on Google with Squarespace because of this. That’s not to say it’s not possible, please don’t hear me say that! But, it is harder. And why make something harder when it doesn’t have to be? The way SEO is done on Squarespace is hard to figure out and not very intuitive, so people often skip it.

With Showit, you can do on-page SEO for every page of your website. And, I have a video in the training course teaching you how to do this REALLY WELL! I’m teaching you what we do for my business and what I do for my clients. I also teach you how to do SEO on your images. It’s awesome and can make a HUGE shift in your business. Being found regularly on Google is awesome!

With Showit, you can also use Yoast SEO for blogging. It’s the best SEO plugin around (and again there are 2 trainings on that in my Showit course.) With a template from my shop, the training library and the capabilities of Showit, your SEO is going to ROCK! I’ve had clients go from not ranking at all for any valuable searches to ranking within a week or two after we do their SEO.

Showit customer support screenshot

7. Showit's customer support is truly top-notch when it comes to website builders.

Like I said in the beginning, Showit and Squarespace both have support teams, so if you love Squarespace’s support, you’ll still have great support! With Showit, if something goes wrong or you have a question, you can literally chat with a real person immediately right there in your account. Showit also has “emergency” support for if something happens to your site to get you an even faster response time. Plus, you have ME as support. I offer one-on-one lifetime customer support with your template plus the training course, that I’m always keeping up to date with the best resources to help you with your website.

And a cool thing about Showit, not only do they host your website, but they also help you launch it. So, the tech stuff of connecting your domain name to your website and moving over blog posts to your new website, they do it all for you! In the training course, I give you with your template, you’ll have a video to watch that teaches exactly what you need to do for your part, then Showit takes care of the rest.

All in all, Squarespace is NOT a bad platform — obviously, that’s why we are talking about it!  But, I believe Showit is more user-friendly and allows for more creativity. If you are interested in switching to Showit, listen to the podcast episode of this blog post for a 10% discount code!

showit vs wordpress

My experience with Showit and WordPress (Psst.. I used to be a WordPress designer!):

As you may know, I design on Showit. I have a Showit website template shop. But, one thing you may not know is that I designed on WordPress before I switched to Showit! Yep, I was a “WordPress designer.” And I don’t hate WordPress at all. We actually use it as the blogging platform that works with Showit, which I’ll get to later in this post.

But, for most business types, I don’t love WordPress on its own. When I was designing on WordPress, I found that most of my clients couldn’t update their websites with ease after we finished the project. It was really difficult for them to use, and this was a bummer for me because I wanted my clients to be able to maintain their websites on their own!

Things I love about WordPress:

WordPress is crazy powerful and quite limitless with the number of plugins out there that you can add to your website.

Why I don’t recommend WordPress for your small business website:

While WordPress has many plugins and functions, its power comes at a major time, maintenance, and learning cost. Because of this, I don’t think it’s the right move for most small businesses.

Website designer using Showit

Showit vs WordPress: Key Differences

testimonial of Showit vs WordPress

1. Showit is much easier to use than WordPress.

This is the biggest reasons why I don’t recommend WordPress for most people. It’s not easy to use — simple. It’s techy and if you’re someone who flips out over tech problems, then it won’t be for you.

There’s a STEEP learning curve to figuring out WordPress, plus a lot of maintenance on your end.

Just like Showit, there are tons of WordPress templates available, and probably more WordPress templates than for any other website builder. Even if you are using a template to build your WordPress website, you’ll need to learn (or at least understand) some coding to maintain the website on your own. YES, CODING — some HTML, CSS, and maybe a little JavaScript too. Does that make you cringe? This makes MANY people cringe and why so many choose to move away from WordPress.

Most people who use WordPress and are not design-savvy, have to pay a designer or developer every time they make a change to their website. I saw someone posting about this in a Facebook group the other day. She wrote that every time she needs a small tweak to her site, she has to contact her designer, wait for a reply, the designer makes the changes, and a big fee comes. She was wishing she could just do the edits herself.

With Showit, you don’t need coding knowledge whatsoever. CODE-FREE. Every single template you see in my shop can be edited without any coding. Showit is so easy to use. It’s intuitive, while still allowing a ton of flexibility, which we will get into in a moment. If you hate the difficulties of customizing templates in WordPress or dealing with your custom website, you’ll love Showit.

Here’s what Zoe Larkin, a photographer in San Francisco, had to say about switching to Showit from WordPress:

“I’m hopeless at design and used to be resigned to the fact that my website would pretty much just not be that great. I wouldn’t have the budget for a custom website, so I had just been using basic [WordPress] templates. I was new to Showit and had been a dyed-in-the-wool WordPress user for over 5 years. I had no idea whether I’d be able to figure it out! I’d browsed what felt like hundreds of templates and not a single one felt usable to me. The experience with Elizabeth has surpassed my expectations and quashed my doubts!

I love the finished result and how easy it was to change a few things around and get the website you now see. It was just a question of slotting in my own links and images – the design is so comprehensive and there are so many pages and canvases to choose from! 100% worth it.”

How using Showit is different from other website builders

2. Editing a Showit template is WAY different than editing a WordPress template.

With my Showit templates, you can edit anything you see. Yes, ANYTHING. You can change the fonts, colors, the images, the entire layout in just clicks. Don’t like where the logo is in the navigation? Rearrange it. Don’t like the footer having Instagram images? Remove them. It’s so simple!

This is not true of WordPress templates. Sure, you can change the fonts, colors, words, and images, but beyond that, you are generally STUCK to the template’s layout.

I still remember once early on in my business, I was editing a client’s WordPress template. She had paid me to make some small tweaks to the template she had purchased. In her template, their logo was in the middle of the navigation with navigation options on each side. She wanted the logo above the navigation with options underneath. While this seems like a simple tweak, you couldn’t do this in the template. It literally wasn’t an option. So, I resulted to coding it in and literally readjusting the template to make this work. While doing that, I crashed their website and had to contact their host for hours to get it back up. Don’t worry, that doesn’t happen with Showit.

With Showit, you can move stuff wherever you want and you actually can’t crash your website. It really isn’t possible! So, if you’re looking at my templates and you really, really love one… but you already see some fast things you’d want to change to make it more unique to your brand, I just want you to know that you CAN make those changes. Or, you can choose to keep it the exact same and just change out the images and text. I’ve had people do it both ways and both ways are fabulous.

Stunning sales page template for Showit, for photographers to sell courses

3. Showit has amazing mobile customization options.

With Showit, you have a mobile view and a desktop view that you can edit inside the website builder. It’s INCREDIBLE! I love this feature because sometimes there’s something you want on the desktop version but you don’t want on mobile or vice versa. All the items are still the same, but you can make both totally unique for that specific need. This is incredible because sometimes you want less content (or slightly different content) on your mobile website. With over 63% of people regularly using phones to access your website, mobile is more important than ever!

With WordPress and Squarespace, you’re only editing the desktop version of your website. The mobile version is formed from your template settings based on what you set up on the desktop version. This can lead to a less than ideal mobile website that doesn’t look like what you hoped for. For example, an image that looks beautiful on your desktop site might cut to just your midsection on the mobile version. Or, a section that looks awesome on a desktop might look cluttered when viewed on a phone.

4. Hosting on Showit versus Hosting on WordPress (very different!)

Showit hosts your website for you. So, your website fees end up being for your domain name and then what you pay to Showit. With WordPress, you’ll have to secure your own hosting through an outside company.

Choosing your own hosting company can feel hard and complicated, and it’s just one more techy thing you have to do to get your website up and running.

A cool thing about Showit, not only do they host your website, but they also help you launch it. So, Showit takes care of all of the tech stuff like connecting your domain name to your website and moving over blog posts to your new website.

In the training course, I include with your template, you’ll have a video to watch that teaches exactly what you need to do for your part, then Showit takes care of the rest. The hosting side of things is MUCH simpler and easier to manage with Showit.

Showit customer support screenshot

4. Showit's customer support is the best of the best when it comes to website builders.

Although there are plenty of people helping other people with WordPress, WordPress itself doesn’t have 1:1 customer support. If something is messed up or your site gets hacked, it’s up to you to fix it on your own. I have been there fixing it on my own crashed website, and it’s not fun!

With Showit, if something goes wrong or you have a question, you can chat with a real person immediately right there in your account. Showit also has “emergency” support for if something happens to your site to get you an even faster response time. Plus, you have ME as support. I offer one-on-one lifetime customer support with your template plus the training course, that I’m always keeping up to date with the best resources to help you with your website.

Basically, if you’re super techy or have a team of techy people, WordPress could be great for you! But, if you need help and support and a website that’s easy to maintain on your own, I’d stick to Showit.

5. Both a similarity and a difference: Blogging

If you use Showit and choose to have a blog, you will write your blogs on WordPress. You’ll use WordPress’s plugins, SEO capabilities, and publishing tools to write your blog posts. And you might be thinking “But, Elizabeth, we hate WordPress!! Isn’t that what this post is all about?!” First of all, no we don’t hate WordPress! Secondly, the things that make WordPress not ideal on its own, Showit fixes.

Let’s do a quick recap of Showit and WordPress differences:

With Showit, you will not do any “designing” in WordPress. All of the blog layout designing happens in Showit, so it’s easy to edit, you can customize it as much as you’d like, and you can customize the mobile view! And, Showit hosts your WordPress website! So, that’s who your host is and they rock. For your WordPress support team, you have me and Showit. See, it’s a totally different world when Showit steps into the game!

Why I love WordPress for blogging with Showit:

1. WordPress has the absolute best SEO capabilities of any website platform.

I love Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It’s a huge tool for getting traffic to your site— maybe you even found me through a Google search! I’m here to say, I have WordPress’s SEO plugin to thank for that.

And, when you buy a template from me, I’ll tell you exactly what plugins you need to use and there is a 30-minute training video on SEO that will completely transform the way you do it. The SEO capabilities of WordPress are truly above and beyond any other platform, hence why all the big news companies like Microsoft News and Tech Crunch choose WordPress.

2. WordPress blogging capabilities are simply second to none.

WordPress is the most powerful and most popular blogging platform. That’s why Showit partnered with WordPress instead of creating its own blogging platform. They saw that WordPress ROCKED at this and said: “Let’s keep that and fix what doesn’t work.”

If you’re a WordPress user now, and you don’t like blogging in WordPress, I really believe you’ll like it when Showit steps in and I teach you exactly what plugins to use! My all-time favorite WordPress plugin makes blogging a drag-and-drop breeze, trust me!

3. WordPress offers so many plugins.

Plugins are “add ons” you can put on your website to make it do really cool things. WordPress has thousands of plugins you can add to your blog to make it totally custom to your needs. This is unique to WordPress and not something you’ll find with Squarespace or Wix. In the training course, I tell you the main plugins I recommend as MUST-HAVES for your blog (and they are all free). And, I will teach you how to search for your own whenever you need to do something new.

There are plugins for things like adding a recipe to a blog post, creating beautiful blog layouts for photographers to display photos, making sure people can easily pin your posts to Pinterest, creating link redirects, and so much more!! The plugin game is one of my favorite things about WordPress, and I love teaching people exactly what to use!

Check out this quote from a wonderful wellness coach, Kyra Cosman about her experience with Showit vs WordPress with EM Shop:

“If you're thinking that your website needs an update and are contemplating getting a template from EM shop, I would say go for it! Elizabeth's templates really are the next best thing to a custom website. They really have that personal touch and it's clear that every detail has been well thought out.

I had done a ton of research on templates for Showit and I can honestly say that none compared to EM Shop. The support that Elizabeth offers is amazing! She was so quick to answer all of my questions both before and after I purchased the template. The video training course had answers to all of my initial questions and this made setting it up a breeze. It helped me set attainable goals for each day helped me get it launched quickly. You really can have it all set up in 7 days.

After I was ready to launch, I had a couple more questions about how to integrate certain features into my website. I sent Elizabeth an email in the evening, and by the next morning, she had sent me a detailed video of her explaining the answers to all of my questions. I have used templates before and this one was by far the easiest to customize!”

Whether you are a long-time user of Squarespace or aren’t quite sold on their website platform but the Superbowl ad has you curious, welcome! If you are looking for Squarespace templates for photographers, I could probably guess two things about you are true:

  1. You value a beautiful website that showcases your work
  2. You want your website to be easy to update

Am I right? If so, you are definitely in the right place. While all of my Elizabeth McCravy Shop templates are built for Showit and not Squarespace, about 80% of the people switching to Showit are coming from Squarespace. You may feel like so many photographers are raving about Squarespace that you think it’s the only option, but I am here to stick my heels in the sand and tell you that it’s simply not true in 2023. So before you bounce off this page in search of Squarespace templates, I would love just two minutes to talk about why I believe that Showit Templates are better than Squarespace Templates for photographers!

showit is a better alternative to squarespace templates for photographers

Why Showit is the Best Website Platform for Photographers

I dive deep into the details in this Showit vs. Squarespace comparison, but here are just a few reasons why I truly believe Showit is the best platform for photographers (regardless of whether you specialize in weddings, branding, portraits, or newborns!).

1. Showit website templates are easier to use!

If you have purchased a Squarespace template for photographers before, you know that some things will require complicated code to change. NOT Showit. Showit is a true “drag and drop” platform, and while you might feel like you can customize your website on Squarespace now, I promise you that it is a drop in the bucket when you compare what Showit is capable of.

With Squarespace, everything is COMPLETELY template based. With Showit templates, the end result can look truly unique and custom to your business - which is even more important in more saturated industries like photography! Say goodbye to complicated coding or using Photoshop for everything.

Speaking of marketing in saturated industries - I want to throw in a shameless plug here. If you haven’t taken a look at our Showit website template shop yet, run don’t walk. Not only do we design our templates to have a wow-factor aesthetic, they are strategically designed with creative businesses in mind.

2. You want full creative control (including on mobile!)

Have you ever wished you could customize what your website looks like on your phone? With Showit, the mobile experience is completely independent of the desktop, so if you want parts of your website to look different (in terms of photos or the information you include!), it’s incredibly easy to do. As a photographer, your images are EVERYTHING. With Showit, you never need to struggle with a weird crop or wonky image on the mobile version again.

You are a creative and you want a website that reflects that and actually allows you to be creative. You may want to start with a template (and we might be biased but we think that’s a really good idea - especially if you want your website up fast and flawlessly!), but you don’t want to be restricted by a template. We’ve got you.

that feeling when you launch a new website

3. It’s easier to rank on Google with Showit.

Hear me out on this one - it’s NOT impossible to rank on Google with Squarespace (you can totally do it), BUT Showit’s capabilities both as a website platform and as a blogging platform is unparalleled. Showit actually uses WordPress for blogging, which means you have access to one of the most powerful blogging platforms in the world, without needing to sacrifice design. As a bonus, inside of my Showit Blueprint Course (included with every Elizabeth McCravy Shop template!), I show you my favorite WordPress plugins to use to make sure your ideal customers can find you on Google every single time!

And by they way, if you haven’t experienced the benefits of an SEO-optimized website template yet, this is probably going to be your favorite part about switching to Showit.

There are so many different website builders out there, and it can be very confusing deciding which one is right for you! If you're weighing the choice of Showit vs Wix, that’s exactly what this blog post is for, friend! These two website builders are similar in many ways, but their differences are HUGE.

I’m sharing in the most basic terms:

UPDATE TO THIS PODCAST EPISODE

In this episode, I mention that you can transfer your blog posts from Wix to Showit. That has changed. Wix does not provide Showit with an export file that would allow the Showit team to migrate the blog to their servers. For that reason, Showit currently only does blog migrations from WordPress and Squarespace. If you want to move blog posts from Wix to Showit, the solution is to do it manually. The audio for this episode does still say that you can transfer your blog, but everything in this post is correct and up to date.

Showit versus Wix - which one is better?

Showit vs Wix: The Similarities

1. Showit and Wix are both website builders that also host your website.

Both platforms host your website and provide you with an interface where you can build the site out. So, you pay them to be your host, whereas, with a WordPress-hosted website, you actually have to pay an outside host of your choice to “host” it. I love it when website builders also host for you! It makes things a lot simpler and usually will help with any support issues you have. This is a PRO of both Showit and Wix. In addition to both hosting your website, they are virtually the same price. Just $3 apart for the same level plan.

Showit mobile experience

2. Showit and Wix both allow you to edit your mobile site separately from your desktop site.

3. They both have a lot of templates you can start with.

Both platforms have MANY companies selling templates, both inside their own website and externally. All you have to do is a quick Google search for your niche and that website builder and you’ll find all sorts of templates! If you'll be using Showit, be sure to check out my templates here!

Wix vs Showit: Key Differences

I design on Showit. My website templates are built on Showit as well as my custom sites. I LOVE IT! I choose to work with Showit because it goes above and beyond any other platform. I must say, I have designed sites on Squarespace and WordPress, but I have not designed anything on Wix. So, I’m speaking more from research and my past clients' experiences than from my own experience! I’ve explored the Wix interface plenty and I’ve had many custom design clients and template buyers switch from Wix to Showit and have heard their stories about it.

How using Showit is different from other website builders

1. Ease of Use — Showit is easier to use than Wix:

In Showit, you can “drag and drop.” And honestly, I don’t even know if “drag and drop” is the best term here! Because you aren’t dragging stuff into a super stringent template where stuff has to go. You can literally do whatever you want. There is so much creative freedom.

While Wix also advertises itself as “easy to use” and affordable — from my own experience and the experience of my clients, Showit is an even easier platform when it comes to designing your website. This allows you to control more on your website using Showit. In Wix, you’re more tied to the template design, which makes changing things more difficult. When you think about yourself using a template with Showit, you can truly know that you can change as much or as little as you want!

It really is EASIER and more intuitive to use. And, with my templates, I take it a step further and give you an online course to teach you how to use Showit. You get an actual online course on this included in your purchase! The course videos are short, sweet, and to the point. You’ll watch the introduction videos to get rolling, and then after that, you watch what you need as you need it. This really helps prevent the overwhelm that comes with a new platform and any difficulties that come with learning something new. I’ll be there to teach you and support you! So, know that in the opinion of many people, Showit is easier to use than Wix.

Showit is great for SEO testimonial

2. SEO Capabilities — Showit's SEO is fantastic:

Wix does let you do SEO on your site by answering a couple of questions and then they “do SEO for you.” However, it’s not very good (my opinion) and you’ll likely struggle a bit to get found on Google. I’m NOT saying it’s impossible to have good SEO with Wix. I’m just saying it’s harder, and why make something harder when it doesn’t have to be?

With Showit, you can do on-page SEO for every page of your website. And, I have a video in the training course teaching you how to do this REALLY WELL! I’m teaching you what we do for my business and what I do for my clients. I also teach you how to do SEO on your images. It’s awesome and can make a HUGE shift in your business. Being found regularly on Google is awesome!

With Showit, you can also use Yoast SEO for blogging. It’s the best SEO plugin around (and again there are 2 training videos on that in my Showit course). With a template from my shop, the training library and the capabilities of Showit, your SEO is going to ROCK! I’ve had clients go from not ranking at all for any valuable searches to ranking within a week or two after we do their SEO.

Showit customer support screenshot

3. Customer Support with each of these website builders is super different:

With Showit, if something goes wrong or you have a question, you can chat with a real person immediately right there in your account. Showit also has “emergency” support for if something happens to your site to get you an even faster response time. Plus, you have ME as support. I offer one-on-one lifetime customer support with your template plus the training course, that I’m always keeping up to date with the best resources to help you with your website. Wix also has customer support, but they are less available and less effective than Showit in my experience.

4. The way you blog on Showit and the way you blog on Wix is totally different.

I cover all my favorite WordPress plugins to let you do really cool things on your website (again, not a feature of Wix), there’s a 30-minute training on doing SEO on your blog posts, a video on how to set up your blogs, and so much more!

So, if WordPress scares you, don’t let it. You’ll love it. Seriously, everyone I know who gets to blog on WordPress while being hosted by Showit LOVES IT. It’s the bomb, and the online course is going to help you take your blogging game to the next level. Wix blogging has got nothing on the Showit/WordPress combo!

5. E-Commerce - Wix has it built in. Showit doesn't.

Wix has e-commerce capabilities built right in the platform, and Showit doesn’t. However, Showit can integrate e-commerce with ease.  You might be thinking I’ll count this as a win for Wix, but I don’t. Even though Wix does e-commerce, if you have an actual e-commerce website (where that’s what you’re doing, you’re selling e-commerce) then I’d pick Shopify. Or, you can use Showit and do an integration with companies like Kajabi, ThriveCart, Thinkific, or Shopify Lite!

If you have a lot of products to sell, Showit might not be the right platform for you (or at least not for the e-commerce side of your business).

For example, I have a client right now who did her main website on Showit, but her online courses and membership site are purchased through a ClickFunnels sales page that’s clicked to from the Showit website. It’s awesome, it’s the best of both worlds! As another example, my client, Well-Watered Women did their main website on Showit, but their shop on Shopify. The two sites integrate together beautifully.

So, don’t stick with Wix just because they offer e-commerce built-in, there are other ways to do it that work even better.

EM Shop-Showit-Website-Template-Taylor3

6. The cost difference between Showit and Wix:

Wix is actually less money or the same price as Showit depending on what tier you get of Wix. So, Wix does win on price, which is often why I see people using it. When my template buyers and clients are explaining why they started on Wix, price is usually the first (sometimes the only) thing that they say. You shouldn’t pick something like your website host/builder just based on price, friend. One thing people don’t often realize is you can’t transfer designs between website builders. So, if you design a site on Wix then decide later that you want to change platforms, it won’t work. You can try to replicate what you did on Wix and bring it into the Showit world, but you can’t just click and move between any of these website builders.

So, don’t choose your website builder based on price. You should choose for the longevity of your business. Also, the prices aren’t that different. Wix’s VIP level is the exact same price as Showit’s highest price. And, some of Wix’s less expensive pricing tiers actually put their branding on your website or do things like take away your support and slow down your site speed. The lower prices might be flashy, but they aren’t worth it. Do not make pricing your main factor!

  6. Put up your complimentary EM Shop “Coming Soon Page” while you check your links and website one more time.
  7. Launch your Showit site to the world!
  8. Cancel your Wix hosting after 1-2 weeks.
  9. As a last thing to mention, if you purchased your domain from Wix, I’d recommend moving it to a different platform, such as GoDaddy or Google domains.

If this feels like a switch you want to make, if you want the SEO capabilities and the ease of use of Showit, I want to encourage you now to make the SWITCH! Especially if you don't love your Wix website, there’s no reason not to move over. Don’t be stuck with a website you don’t love because you’re choosing based on price.

Easy as that

Life Coach Website Design Reviews

Not convinced yet? Hear it for yourself!

Hear what Laura Michael has to say about EM Shop and her life coach website template.

“Where to begin! The flexibility with this site is unparalleled. I thought at first that might be totally intimidating, almost like I would have too much flexibility and wouldn't know what to do. But Elizabeth's template gives the perfect amount of structure to work with, and it became fun to tweak things to my taste and personality. My old website was also primarily just my blog. It was really challenging to create compelling pages for sales and my business because the WordPress templates I found that also supported a blog weren't set up for selling. This way I can have both! My business is now front and center, but my blog is still there, too. Also, now my page is quite simple and fun! Sometimes I go to it several times a day and take the quizzes and look at the photos and read the copy over and over again just because I love it so much and it's such a happy, fun page. It makes me really proud.”

- Laura Michael

“I switched to Showit and to EM Shop after being with Squarespace for 4 years. I felt I reached the limits of what I could do myself on my site. I was also bored of the fonts and the limited ways I could present what I wanted to present. I had BIG visions for my website, I wanted to feel proud of it and I wanted it to appeal to creatives who are my audience. When I saw EM Shop templates, I was instantly attracted. I loved the timeline and the before and after columns. I also loved that EM Shop did templates specifically for coaches and that Elizabeth had pages all ready to go because I could use it as a springboard. Her fonts were amazing. I loved the colors, learning about SEO, and blogging. It's empowering to know these things as a business owner and marketer. You also get so much knowledge from Elizabeth's free resources, her podcast, and emails. All in all, I'm super happy and would recommend.”

Hear what Leith Hudson has to say about her new coaching website from EM Shop template.

"I love that the website has personality. It just feels like me in website form and allows me to showcase that to potential clients. I really loved the clean layout and the functionality of the website. It meant that I could just get right into customizing the template and being able to relax in the knowledge that everything would work. Took a lot of the stress out of the process. I particularly also thought the about me page was really fun with the timeline and the fun facts which really allowed me to get creative and infuse the website with my personality as I think this is important in connecting with prospective Clients. And finally, I love that it doesn't just look pretty, but at every turn, it is geared towards generating leads and calls to action to drive results for my business. So much to love about it!”

- Leith Hudson

My website feels like me and showcases my personality uniquely. I'm getting tons of compliments on my About page which I know is super important to potential clients. This is my first website for this business, but I have had portfolio sites on Squarespace before. ShowIt is SO MUCH MORE design-friendly and flexible. The video courses Elizabeth provides along with your template are priceless. They make the process of building your site and adjusting your template so, so easy. And I know I can always go back to them if I have a question.”

As a business coach and educator myself, I know exactly what it takes to create the best Showit templates for coaches. And (humble brag here), I did it. Today, I want to share with you what makes Elizabeth McCravy Showit Website Templates the BEST option for coaches specifically, and share a few of my favorite Showit templates for coaches in 2023. Whether you’re a life coach, business coach, career coach, or some other kind of coach, I have no doubt you’ll LOVE these premium website templates as much as me!

Premium website templates for women life coaches and business coaches

And by the way - if we haven’t met yet, I’m Elizabeth McCravy! I’m a website designer and marketing strategist, and I know how to build bold and brilliantly fun coaching websites. In fact, I’ve custom-designed 20+ websites for coaches and worked with 1300+ people through my Showit template shop. I’ve learned firsthand what works on a coaching website and what doesn’t.

I’ve taken everything I know as a business coach, marketing strategist, and website designer and created templates that establish trust, show your personality, and ultimately make the sale!

When you buy one of our Showit templates for coaches, you get:

  • A website that offers effortless integration with the software you use every day (whether you are a Dubsado and Convertkit kind of coach or prefer Honeybook and Flodesk in your coaching toolkit)
  • To ditch expensive “one-off” platforms like Lead Pages, and instead invest in a website that houses your sales pages and landing pages so you can grow your email list so that you can sell your online courses and digital products with ease without lowering your conversion rate.
  • A website that was designed with search engine optimization in mind. I know what it takes to rank on Google (maybe that’s how you found me today?) and I know how quickly bad design can tank your rankings. That won’t happen here!

Allow me to introduce a few of my favorite Showit templates for coaches…

Gabby podcast for coaching businesses

Gabby: A Polished, yet Fun Website Template for Coaches

Gabby is a favorite for Elizabeth McCravy Shop customers, and even has a matching podcast kit and sales page design! If you are building a coaching business, you know how important it is to create helpful evergreen content, so whether you are in your client’s ears on a podcast or writing content for your blog, the Gabby is a great choice. This template is polished, lively, fun, and bold. The color palette is stunning (although it’s easy to switch to your own brand colors too!).

This template won 1st place among over 30 designs in a Showit design competition partly because of the way the dynamic features keep your viewer engaged and clicking to the next step. The modern and clean layout is perfect for business coaches, wellness coaches, weight loss coaches, health coaches, consultants, and nutritionists or yoga teachers.

Alright guys, it is launch week — I’m 36 weeks pregnant, and two new templates have just arrived in my shop! I’m excited to walk you through the new designs, share why I created templates for this niche, and talk about strategies for designing more niche templates if you're a fellow designer and interested in that.

If you're curious about what I’ve been working on lately — both during this podcast break and in life in general — these new templates will give you a little behind-the-scenes look at my design process. Let’s get into it!

Alright, I’m so excited to announce two new templates in my shop! These are a little different from my usual ones: they don’t have a human first name like the rest of my templates, they’re a lower investment while still being full site templates, and they’re my most niche designs yet. They are live now — you can check them out here and here!

Launching Niche Website Templates

These templates are geared toward a slightly different niche, which I’ll dive into more. One is designed for lactation consultants, and the other is for birth and postpartum doulas and midwives. Between the two, they could also work great for childbirth educators, sleep consultants, placenta encapsulation specialists, maternal health coaches, and more. And honestly, even if you're not in the birth or baby space but you love the vibe of these designs, they can still work beautifully for your business. But birth and postpartum care were definitely my focus while creating them.

Creating These Showit Website Templates While Pregnant

Every one of my pregnancies has included a major business project. With my first son, Colin, I created Booked Out Designer — which is something you can only really pull off when you don’t have other kids yet! Then during my second pregnancy with Ethan, I created my course Podcast Success Blueprint. And now, during this pregnancy, I’ve created these new templates for my daughter. So while my boys each got a course during my pregnancies, my daughter gets templates — which I think is pretty sweet and special in its own way.

I actually came up with an idea for another course a couple of weeks ago — a mini-course I’m really excited about — but I had to remind myself that now is not the time. That project will wait for after maternity leave! But it’s been really fun seeing how these pregnancy seasons have paired with these creative business seasons too.

This project allowed me to blend my passion for design with my personal passion for birth and postpartum care. I’m a huge fan of birth workers, doulas, midwives, OBs, lactation consultants — really everyone involved in supporting women during this season.

Personally, I’ve worked with many of these providers throughout my pregnancies, including having a birth doula for all three of my births. So it just felt very natural to design for these industries.

Niche Website Templates for Showit

Now typically, my website templates are geared more toward online business owners and aren’t really hyper-niched. For example, one might be modeled around a copywriter, but it’s still meant to work for a broad range of service providers with minimal filler copy.

But for these new templates, I kept my usual structure and pages while tailoring the content much more specifically to these industries.

For example, the lactation consultant template includes a pricing page, which I don’t typically include in my other templates. Through my research, I found that many lactation consultants clearly list their services and pricing up front, so I designed for that. It also includes two About pages — one version for a solo lactation consultant, and one for a business that has a full team of lactation consultants, doulas, or similar providers.

For the doula template, the service page is designed specifically for doulas who offer birth support and highlights training, certifications, and other important details that wouldn’t normally be featured on my more generalized service pages. I also added a resource page, where doulas can share things like recommended pregnancy books, hospital bag checklists, or other helpful client resources.

So as you can hear, these templates are super tailored to these fields.

Why I Chose To Create Super-Niche Website Templates

All images and videos are free stock

First, all images and videos included are free stock. So if you want to leave them in, you totally can — and I actually recommend it! Especially some of the video backgrounds — I picked ones that are very baby- and birth-focused, and they add a unique touch to your website. Of course, you can always swap in your own photos too, but I love that you have the option to keep some of these stock assets as-is.

Usually, my templates involve working with a photographer to source images that my buyers would later replace. But with these, I intentionally selected stock media that many users will find usable right out of the box, making setup even easier.

I do have some templates that use stock photography — all my add-ons typically do — but with these, all of the images and videos are free stock that you can leave as-is or swap out to personalize.

Excellent filler copy

I worked really hard writing the example copy for these templates. The goal was to make it easy for you to customize — even if you’re not a copywriter or designer. So if you’re thinking, “Hey, I’m an IBCLC, not a website designer,” I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how guided and simple the copywriting feels.

I pulled from tons of research and conversations within these industries to create strong copy prompts that you can use or tweak for your business.

SEO-focused

Next: these templates are very SEO-focused and include strong, keyword-rich copy.

This was one of my favorite parts of designing these. I asked myself, “If I were a birth doula, lactation consultant, or home birth midwife, what would I need to rank well on Google for my local business?” SEO for local businesses works very differently than SEO for online businesses, so I really leaned into that while writing the copy.

A lot of templates out there are heavy on visuals but light on words — which makes it hard to rank in search engines. I made sure these templates are built for strong SEO, with plenty of well-placed, thoughtful copy that helps you show up on Google. SEO is something I’ve always prioritized as a designer — both for my own business and for my customers — and many of my template users see great SEO results.

These niche templates are also lower cost

Another thing you’ll love: these templates include a lot of pages, while still being lower cost than my other full site templates.

The birth doula template includes 13 pages, and the lactation consultant template has 14. You absolutely don’t have to use every page or section — that’s one of the beautiful things about Showit. For example, if you’re not ready to offer discovery calls, you can simply hide or delete that page and add it back later when you are.

The lactation consultant template includes two About page options — one for solo practitioners and one for group practices with a team. You might only need one, or you may even repurpose the layouts to fit your needs. There’s a lot of flexibility built in.

They’re built on Showit — which I believe is the perfect platform for birth work businesses.

One of my motivations for creating these templates was to bring more people in these industries over to Showit from other platforms like Squarespace, Wix, WordPress, or smaller niche platforms. Showit offers so much creative flexibility while still being beginner-friendly — if you’re familiar with using Canva, you’ll find Showit feels similarly intuitive. You can easily update and customize your site without needing to hire a designer for every little change.

Read more: Showit vs WordPress (+ What It’s Like to Switch from WordPress to Showit)

Now, let’s talk about why I created super niche website templates.

These are the most niche templates I’ve ever created. And whether you're a designer or not, I hope sharing my decision-making process helps you think about your own business too.

First, I love trying new things. I’m nine years into my business, seven years into designing templates, and about six and a half years into selling them. At this stage, I like to experiment and try new things. I haven’t really seen many Showit templates directly targeting this niche, but it’s a big niche that’s absolutely worth serving — and Showit is such a perfect fit for these businesses.

Second, I also know I do my best design work when I love and feel connected to the industry I’m designing for — and that’s exactly how I feel about the birth and postpartum space. It’s been such a big part of my own life.

As a pregnant woman while creating these, I really felt like an ideal client for these pretend businesses. I’ve had doulas for all my births, worked with lactation consultants postpartum, and received midwifery care throughout my pregnancies. Even while designing the doula website template, I was in the process of hiring my own doula for this pregnancy. It was all very aligned and meaningful for me.

I didn’t pick a random niche I don’t know anything about — I chose one that fits my personality, my current season of life, and my expertise.

launching niche templates for birth workers

For any fellow designers listening — is it risky to go this niche?

I wouldn’t have created these as my first-ever templates unless my entire business was dedicated to this niche. But if you’re already established, going niche can absolutely be a great way to stand out. The template market is much more saturated now than it was when I started seven years ago — and anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t being realistic. But saturation doesn’t mean you can’t be successful; it just means you need to lean into what makes you unique.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I bring to the table that other designers might not?
  • What am I uniquely passionate about?
  • What industries or people do I feel especially connected to?
  • Design from that place, and you’ll stand out more naturally.

A quick note on pricing these niche website templates

I debated a lot on pricing. There’s so much that goes into launching a template — beyond the design itself, there’s sales pages, customer resources, automations, testing, delivery systems, etc. In the end, I decided these templates deserved their own collection with a different price point that fits the unique niche.

They’re a few hundred dollars less than my other full site templates, but they’re still full site templates — meaning you get everything you need for a complete website, including a full blog. You can pay in full or choose 2-pay or 4-pay options to spread out payments.

For reference, I do have even more affordable add-on templates as well, but these full sites are still priced lower than my usual full site templates.

And to celebrate the launch, if you’re listening live, all my templates — the new ones and my existing collection — are 20% off through June 14, 2025 using the code LAUNCH20

If you’re listening after June 14th, I recommend taking my website personality quiz, where you’ll still get a great discount and guidance on which template fits your business best.

Now is a great time to shop — whether you need a full site template or want to mix in some add-ons to customize things further. And if you're new to Showit and feeling unsure about how it all works, don’t worry — I’ll walk you through that process in a simple way next.

Let me walk you through exactly how the template process works — super simple, even if you don’t feel techy at all.

niche website templates for lactation consultants

Thinking about buying a niche website template?

Step one: Purchase the template

You don’t need to do anything before buying — no need to set up Showit, purchase your domain, or anything else. Just buy the template first. After you purchase, you’ll receive detailed instructions from me on how to install your template into your Showit account.

You’ll also get access to my Showit Blueprint Course, where I walk you through how to use Showit step-by-step. Plus, Showit itself has tons of helpful tutorial videos too. And the great news is: you can start with a free trial of Showit. So your first expense is just the template purchase — you won’t pay for Showit until you're ready.

You can even get a free month of Showit using my code ELIZABETH, no credit card required — which is the best Showit discount you’ll find.

Step two: Install your template

This part is super easy — you’re basically just copying and pasting a code into Showit to load your template. It’s not complicated like uploading and downloading files on WordPress — much simpler. And if anything feels intimidating, I have both written instructions and video tutorials to guide you.

Step three: Start customizing

It doesn’t matter if you already have a website live somewhere else — you can keep that site up while you work on your new one. Once your new site is ready, you’ll switch your domain over to the new site when you’re ready to launch.

Inside Showit, you’ll be able to easily customize your template — kind of like working inside Canva if you’re familiar with that. You can update your photos and videos (or leave the ones I’ve included), update the filler copy (which I highly recommend using as a guide as you write), and even adjust fonts, colors, and layouts as much or as little as you want.

Read more: How to Customize Your Showit Website Template Really Fast

Step four: When you’re ready to launch, I have resources for that too.

Plus, something unique we offer is in-house customer support. While Showit has great support, sometimes it’s helpful to get assistance from someone who knows your specific template. My customers can reach out to me and my team directly for help with their templates. (And fun fact — while recording this episode, I literally paused to answer a customer support email!)

If you want to check out the templates directly:

You can also see more behind-the-scenes on my Instagram, @elizabethmccravy — and I’d love to hear what you think!

Don’t forget, you can shop the launch sale now using the code LAUNCH20 for 20% off everything. And yes — I’m still 36 weeks pregnant, feeling breathy as I record this (third baby problems 😄), but so excited to share these with you. Enjoy!

“If I’m not a photographer, should I use Showit?” — a question I’ve been seeing for YEARS now! The short answer: YES! Showit is for non-photographers, too. If you’re not a photographer, but you are a business owner who wants creative control over your website, then yes, 100% Showit is for you! In fact, the majority of my clients and customers aren’t photographers (or even in the wedding industry), but instead are in industries like coaching, consulting, bookkeeping, blogging, course creation, designers, health and wellness, virtual assistant, marketing, and others!

So, if you don’t consider yourself creative, you’ve never touched a camera and you definitely aren’t in the wedding industry… Showit is still perfect for your business. My non-photographer clients love that Showit allows them to do things like…

  • Update their website on their own — without hiring a designer and without doing any coding
  • Actually edit the template they purchase — with Showit, literally everything you see in a template, from the colors and fonts to the layout itself, is editable.
  • Create a website that’s different from everyone else in their industry
  • Control their SEO with ease so that they can actually rank on Google
  • Get their website live and launched quickly (and with ease!)

So, if Showit isn’t just a website builder for photographers, then WHO IS it best for?

Showit isn’t just for photographers. Here’s who Showit is GREAT for…

You’ll see Showit templates used by basically any business that wants a super cool and unique website design! Yes, Showit is HUGE among photographers, videographers, and other wedding industry pros (like wedding planners, florists, and venues), but like I’ve said… it’s not just for photographers.

A lot of different industries, right?! I’ve had template customers who fit into every single one of these categories. They use Showit (and LOVE IT), as non-photographers!

Showit mobile experience

So, who is Showit NOT good for then?

I just listed a ton of industries that Showit is excellent for, but Showit isn’t necessarily the right website builder for every single business out there. The main factors I’d argue make Showit possibly not the right fit for your business is e-commerce needs.

If you are an online retailer with lots of products that change out frequently, then Showit likely isn’t right for you. Yes, you can do e-commerce with Showit. (I do!) But when you’re needing a shop with any more than 20 items, I’d recommend Shopify instead.

Why Showit is associated with the photography industry — The History of Showit (in a nutshell):

Showit was co-founded by Todd Watson in 2006. Years later, Todd is still the CEO of Showit, and the company is co-owned with his amazing wife, Elisa Watson. I can speak from knowing them, Todd and Elisa are incredible people and have such a heart for building community and helping small businesses.

The original Showit Desktop” was launched in 2008 and was completely geared towards photographers back then. It was literally a website builder “for photographers”. The original roots of Showit are why I think so many people still associate it as “just for photographers”! Showit also used to be associated with the company Pass (which is for photographers and was created alongside Showit Co-Founder, David Jay). The two companies split completely in 2014. Showit5 was launched in early 2016 — This was a HUGE (and amazing) shift from Showit Desktop, which was built on Adobe Flash. From my perspective, Showit really took off with Showit5 and that’s when I started hearing about it as a designer.

Showit also hosts a yearly conference in Arizona called “United”, and this conference is specifically for photographers. I’ve been to United as a website designer in a sea of photographers and still gained so much value. It’s a conference focused on building your photography business, making industry friends, and having TONS of fun. In 2019, I even left the conference with the amazing award — ”Showiteer of the Year”!

Since its start in 2006, Showit has moved to no longer supporting the original Showit Desktop, and Showit5 is now just “Showit '' since there’s only ONE website builder available. Even though Showit launched as the “website builder for photographers,” they now aim to make it clear in their marketing that Showit is for ANY business that wants creative control over their website. Showit has grown to 30+ employees and is still based in the beautiful Gilbert, Arizona! As a company, you can’t help but fall in love with their team, their mission, and all the ways they aim to help small businesses!

“But what if I’m NOT creative… Is Showit still a good fit for me?”:

I mentioned that Showit is great for businesses that want creative control over their websites. Does that mean you need to be “creative”? Absolutely not! In fact, I’d say if you’re not creative, Showit is great for you because you can just buy an awesome creative template and still get a stellar website.

Calling all Showit users and business owners thinking about using Showit as your website builder. Showit rocks, and if you've been around here for a second, you probably know that I love Showit. My website is built on Showit, I sell Showit templates, and I'm a Showit Design Partner. I love Showit — plain and simple.

In my membership, Breakthrough Brand All Access, one of the members asked what cool Showit features I don't see people using enough or are underutilized, and we talked about it in our Facebook community and in a member Q&A. Still, her question inspired me to talk to you guys about this. So, I'm sharing 5 cool Showit features you may not know about that you should try on your website. These are features that I'm loving lately, and I think you will as well!

These cool Showit features and tips are for non-designers and designers alike. So if you're reading and thinking, "Well, that's cool, Elizabeth, but I'm not a designer." Fear not — you can edit your website for your non-designer business to do these things too. No need to hire a designer to set these cool features up!

Want a Showit template that’s implementing these features?  I just released a collection of Showit Sales Page templates that match our top-selling templates. No more piecing together a sales page based on another page of your site or struggling with what goes where on the sale page. I’ve got it all set up for you. These sales page templates have over 30 sections (called canvases in Showit) designed to guide you through creating an epically amazing, high-converting sales page for your online course, membership, coaching program, digital product, or whatever it is you’re launching.

I’ve brought the same strategy I use on my own sales pages to you in these templates. The new templates and all my other templates are 20% off right now to celebrate. 1. Use videos and animated GIFs as backgrounds on your website!

Showit has a built-in feature that allows you to put a video as a background on a canvas on your website. The video has to be under 30 seconds, have no volume, and be under 8MB. All of that being met, this looks incredible. You can have text over it, do parallax or have it scroll with the page; so many options — all on the desktop side.

You can't do videos on mobile. However, you can use animated GIFs to resemble videos on your mobile site in order to get that effect. You'll want it to be a shorter video with a smaller file, but to the user, it looks the same! I have a video on how to do this in my Showit Blueprint course that comes with all template purchases

Using video on your website is a sure-fire way to engage viewers. Video is so hot in website design because of things like Instagram Reels and TikTok. Regarding your website, I'm referring to any form of 'movement' in place of an image as a video, which is why a short clip on a GIF is included.

Having even one video on your site can help your website strategy by improving SEO [source here]. It can also increase time spent on your site and improve your Google ranking because they prioritize sites that use video. Research conducted by Mist Media found that "The average internet user spends 88% more time on a website that includes video content." Another study by Brafton reported that "Viewers stay on a website six times longer if the site includes video." [source here]

Besides all of that, video looks cool, and it's modern; it's engaging, and it makes things feel fresh. You might be thinking, "How am I supposed to use video? I don't have the money/time to hire a videographer. I don't have any professional branded videos."

There are two things I want to tell you to help you create videos for your website. The first is to use your iPhone to create videos. You don't need professional videography work, especially for these types of videos. They are short and will be put on a loop on your site. The second is to use stock videos! I tend to use stock videos more than anything!

One site I love for free stock videos is Pexels. They have so many free stock videos and images. This is the site I use for the videos in my templates. In addition, you can search Pexel for a variety of topics and find fabulous videos that integrate well into your brand. For example, check out the Kate, Elle, Taylor, and Gabby templates from my shop to see background videos in action! You can find all the templates here!

2. Integrate canvases with the new gradient feature to fade the colors between canvases.

Showit has been rolling out all sorts of updates lately. A cool Showit feature you'll see now in your account is grid snapping to help align everything on your site! I got the chance to see this at the Showit designer retreat.

One of my favorite new additions is the gradient feature for canvases. Within Showit, you can make a section of your site fade from one color to another. There are many ways to use this feature beyond two colors fading horizontally. I've loved using it to fade between canvases for a more integrated site that flows.

For example, instead of going from a light blue to a white canvas background, it will slightly fade to the new color in a seamless way. You can also use this feature over videos or photos with text. You can do this on mobile and desktop sites. If you want to see this in action beautifully, check out the Kate template here, it uses this new feature a ton!

The Background Gradient Tool Inside Showit

3. Use the slide transition to set text to scroll over an area slowly.

Showit has all sorts of transitions built in for any objects you can make, from fading something in to sliding it out or bouncing it in and out. I love using transitions. However, you don't want to overdo it and overwhelm users.

You'll see me use these features on my templates, but very strategically, in a way that makes sense. One thing I love lately for my templates and my website is having text sliding slowly for high impact. Instead of just saying something, you can have it repeated across the page.

All you need to do is set your transition speed slower, and on a slide, type in the text you want to do this with on repeat. For example, it could be "coming soon" on repeat sliding slowly. Look at the coming soon pages on the Elle and Kate templates to see this in action. It is so fun and high-impact.

4. Embed stuff for a super integrated web experience for your clients/customers.

You could have your call scheduler, intake form, and payment page open in a new window. Or, you can EMBED stuff from outside sites directly into Showit; no coding required. This will create an integrated user experience, so they don't have to leave your website.

This link is also much easier for you to remember. So instead of linking to your call scheduler, you can embed Calendly for easy access without remembering any complicated links. I've been doing this since I started using Showit

Some other pages I'd consider doing this on:

  • Waitlist application - embed a form from Dubsado or Honeybook
  • Call schedule for your group program - embed the schedule
  • Opt-in form from FloDesk — embed it instead of opening it in a new FloDesk site window.

Most of my templates have a call scheduling page already designed and ready for you. If you're trying to get your website up quickly and feel stressed about getting a bunch of things done, this is something that can wait. It's worth doing, but it doesn't have to be done before launch. Again, it's easier on you because you will always know the link, and it's easier on your clients and creates a more integrated experience.

5. Use Beaver Builder to write/build out your blog posts.

I think I'm one of the only Showit designers talking about Beaver Builder. It's like my best-kept secret, honestly. I love it. It's a page builder for WordPress that I specifically use for my BLOG.

I do not use it for my website pages because those are in Showit, but for blog posts. Beaver Builder allows you to design the layout of your blog in Showit. Then when it comes to putting in all the content, you're using Beaver Builder to lay it out.

It's a drag-and-drop builder that is far more intuitive than WordPress's native blog builder. The caveat here is that you need the advanced subscription of Showit to use the Beaver Builder plugin. The plugin itself is free. There are paid options, but they are not necessary here. I have videos on blogging with Beaver Builder in my Showit blueprint course. If you're a customer of mine, you have access to these videos, and it's worth checking out!

[For even more cool WordPress plugins to try with Showit, check out this blog post for my 7 favorites.]

Beaver Builder Blog features

To recap:

  1. Use videos and animated GIFs as backgrounds on your website!
  2. Integrate canvases with the new gradient feature to fade the colors between canvases.
  3. Use the slide transition to set text to scroll over an area slowly.
  4. Embed stuff for a super integrated web experience for your clients/customers.
  5. Use Beaver Builder to write/build out your blog posts.

So, that's 5 cool Showit features you should try on your site! I hope this was super helpful for you! Share this with other Showit users who would love to learn about these cool features. Let me know over on Instagram which one of these you're going to try and which one was new to you!

If this article was helpful for you, check out my EM Shop templates here. They are integrating all the things I mentioned in this article FOR YOU. You can do it all naturally because it's built into the templates. I hope to see you with an EM Shop template soon!

Answering FAQs about EM Shop and Showit website templates on the Breakthrough Brand Podcast.

1. What are your templates? What exactly is a website template?

I have a website template shop called EM Shop. As of right now, this is my primary offering in my business! What you’ll find are Showit website templates

You might be thinking, “What is a template?” A website template or theme as they are sometimes called is a pre-made website that you customize to fit your business needs.

The templates are multiple pages and include things like a blog, call scheduling page, service pages, portfolio pages, and so much more.

My intention with these is for you to have a website that you are proud of and want to send people to and that reflects your business’s goals and where you’re headed.

You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a custom website to have a “legit” amazing business website.

2. What costs are involved with your templates?

I get this one a lot and it is a great question! Another version of this question is, ”After I buy your template what else do I need to have my website up and running?"

Here’s what else you will need:

  • The template itself. The first thing to know is a template from me can be your first purchase before you do anything else! I offer a pay in full option or 2 different payment plan options. With all the options, you will get your template immediately so you can get to work on your site! This will be the only thing you pay me for!
  • A Showit subscription. Showit is the website builder my templates work with, which we’ll discuss soon! So, you have to subscribe to their software to use the templates. Similar to other subscriptions, you can pay for the year in full or do a monthly subscription. If you won’t be blogging, then right now Showit (without hosting a blog) is $19/month. If you will be blogging then there are 2 other levels - basic and advanced blog. Basic is $24/month and advanced is $39/month. This cost covers your hosting AND the website builder. You can start customizing your template with the 14 days free trial of Showit before doing anything else! Get 10% off of your Showit subscription here!
  • A domain name. This is the URL that you direct people to in order to see your site. These are super affordable in most cases unless you want a really “in demand” name. You typically pay for this by the year, not monthly. I recommend purchasing your domain from GoDaddy or Google Domains.

3. Can I change (fill in the blank thing) on the template?

I get this email a lot and 99% of the time, our answer is 100% yes you can change it (whatever the thing is).

Most things are editable with these Showit templates! Often people don’t realize this, but I love pointing people to our customer showcase page on my site! You’ll be able to see client sites in action - some which are really customized, others closer to the template and get a good perspective on what all you can do.

Some examples of things you can change and edit that you might not realize or can’t change easily on other platforms:

  • The menu, logo positioning, the footer layout, all those essential areas.
  • The fonts and colors
  • The image orientation and sizing
  • Any particular section you don’t like - you can delete it, move it to another page, duplicate it to have multiple versions, etc. Also, anything you delete from the template can be brought back easily.
  • Literally, anything you see!
  • You can have as many pages as you want. You can duplicate a page you already like as a starting point, then make another page from it.

4. What is Showit? And why does it looks like Showit only is for photographers?

Showit is a website builder similar to Squarespace or Wix. It gives you full creative freedom and the crazy thing about it that people don’t realize until they use it is that you can literally edit everything you see, even as a non-designer.

You can move things around, change fonts, colors, complete layouts - all of it.

Some web builders, like Squarespace, are more structurally based, meaning that if for example the logo is centered at the top of the template you buy, it needs to stay that way.

Showit isn’t like that, you can edit it all yourself with no CSS at all!

I have a whole blog post that goes IN-DEPTH on Showit’s history with photographers that you can see here

The original “Showit Desktop” was launched in 2008 and was completely geared towards photographers back then.

From my perspective, Showit really took off with Showit5 and that is when I started hearing about it as a designer.

5. Why does Showit use WordPress?

This is one of the more confusing aspects of Showit that I see people get hung up on!

When you blog on Showit, that aspect of your website is powered by WordPress. By using Showit (and blogging) you’re actually using both Showit and WordPress.

WordPress is the #1 blogging platform and actually powers more than 42% of ALL websites. But, WordPress is tricky and isn’t the most user-friendly platform if you aren’t familiar with coding.

By using Showit, you get the amazing power of WordPress but with the interface of Showit to design the way your website looks. Now you have all the blogging tools, plugins, and SEO strength that WordPress has to offer with the creative freedom of drag-and-drop.

This is really a win, win in my book as someone who started with WordPress originally before switching to Showit

If you want to hear more about Showit and WordPress and how they are different, I have a whole episode dedicated to that! [Listen to episode #32 for more].

6. If I have WordPress already, will my blogs come over to Showit?

Yes, if you are using WordPress.org for your blog, then it will all come over to Showit

The WordPress interface you are used to for blogging will actually look very much the same! Just the way your site is DESIGNED now will look different. You will control the design settings including the colors, fonts, your blog sidebar, and the way the blog home looks on the Showit side!

That is all for part 1 of this FAQ episode. I hope you enjoyed this and will listen to the full episode to hear all of the good details explained about how these website templates work. I hope I was able to make talking about tech FUN!

I truly love helping first-time business owners launch their first website because it is such a milestone. The day you launch your website as a small business owner is often the day you think of as the official start date of your business. It’s like that ribbon-cutting moment.

If you’re brick-and-mortar, the start date is often the grand opening when customers walk into the building. But when you’re online-only, especially as a service business, it’s often your website going live and you telling people about it. That is the official start.

For me, I actually count my website launch day as day one of my business. I had been freelancing for about six to nine months before that, but the day I made it official is the day I consider my business start date. That was March 29, 2016, which is almost ten years ago now, which is crazy.

I still remember the feeling of building my first website and nervously posting on my Facebook profile and personal Instagram account that I now had a business, with a name, and that I was open for new clients.

Anyway, when I launched my first website, it wasn’t perfect. My current website still isn’t perfect. There are errors that happen on it, even as a designer. But my first website was exactly what my business needed at the time, and it helped me immediately. It helped me book clients and get things rolling.

And for me, as someone who was just 22 at the time, it helped me, in the middle of feeling really nervous about the whole business thing, confidently call myself a business owner.

So before we get into it, I’m going to share what you actually need and don’t need to build your first website. But first, if you’re new here, I want to give you a quick 30-second summary of who I am.

I’m Elizabeth McCravy and I started my business officially almost 10 years ago after quitting my first “real” job. I worked at an advertising agency as a designer, stayed about four months, and then quit with no plan.

I had started freelancing while I was still at that job, but I really ramped it up after I quit. Eventually, that freelancing turned into a legitimate business. At the beginning, I did random design work, websites, social media management, copywriting, whatever people needed, I would do it. I was a jack of all trades and wasn’t sure what I liked most yet. I just knew what I could do and what I enjoyed.

Elizabeth-McCravy-Maternity-Studio-Shoot-30

Over time, I narrowed things down to website design and branding, and within that, I narrowed it further to using Showit as my website builder, which we’ll get into later in this episode. Now, almost ten years later, I’m one of the top Showit website designers. I sell website templates, I’ve helped thousands of businesses with their websites, and I’m also a mom of three.

My youngest is five months old, my oldest is four years old, and I work part-time from home on this business and this podcast, often during nap time. Literally right now, my little girl is napping. I love what I do. I love website design, I love keeping things simple, and I love removing the extreme confusion that often exists around this process.

I really love seeing people make their business legitimate through a website. Taking the dream, making it a reality, making money online, and making money from home. I’m all about working faster and smarter so you can get back to things like being with your family or focusing on other areas of your business.

5 Things You Don’t Need To Build Your First Website

I’m going to start with the five things you don’t need to build your website, and then the five things you do need.

1. You Don’t Need to Have Your Business Running For a Certain Amount Of Time (Or Have Earned a Certain Amount of Money)

The first thing is this: you do not need to have your business or side hustle running for a certain amount of time, or have earned a certain amount of money, to have or need a website.

This mindset is really just selling yourself short. We often make up milestones we think we need to hit before our business is “legit” enough to do the next thing. But typically, you know in your gut when it’s time to get a website.

For some people, that’s day one. For others, it’s more like my experience, where I freelanced for about six to ten months before deciding to make it official with a website. And for some people, they won’t even launch their business until the website is set up.

Or maybe you’ve had a couple of clients through friends or social media, and now you’re feeling that gap because you don’t have a place to send people. You’re thinking, I booked someone through Instagram, but now this next person wants to see more than just a post. They want a website. You don’t have a home base yet.

In those cases, yes, you probably do need a website. What I don’t want you to fall into is the trap of thinking there’s some test you have to pass to prove your business is ready for one. That “ready” point looks different for everyone and depends a lot on your business and what you’re doing.

2. You Don’t Need Custom Coding Or To Hire a Developer

Second, you do not need custom coding or to hire a developer to build your first website, or honestly, for most websites ever. Custom-coded websites are very 15-years-ago. That’s the hill I’ll die on. Technology has advanced to the point where you simply don’t need it.

You likely do not need a developer. If you’re listening to this podcast, you’re probably starting a service-based business or maybe an online course business, something along those lines. You do not need a custom-coded website.

And I’m not even talking about AI advances here. I’m talking about website technology before AI was even a thing.

Now, I’m not saying your website isn’t built using code, or that code isn’t happening on the backend. But you don’t need to code yourself, and you don’t need to hire someone to write custom code for you in order to have a website.

Instead, you can use what’s called a website builder. It often feels similar to using something like Canva, if you’re familiar with that, where you’re dragging and dropping elements to build your website yourself. So just take the coding and developer aspect off the table.

Again, yes, some people do need a developer. If you’re starting an app company or building software, absolutely, you’re hiring a developer. But if you’re starting a copywriting business, bookkeeping, a design company, or maybe you’re a midwife, a doula, or a counselor, you do not need a custom-coded website.

3. You Don’t Need To Invest Thousands in a Custom Website

You do not need $1,000 or more for a custom-designed website when you’re just starting.

Yes, you can hire a designer to custom build a website from scratch, start to finish, if you want to. And if you have the funds and feel confident that a custom website makes sense for your specific business, then sure, that can be a valid option. But for most businesses, that’s not what I recommend.

It’s usually better to invest less money into your first website and have something you can edit, adapt, and change yourself. In the first three years of your business, things are likely going to change a lot.

What often happens is someone spends $10,000 on a custom website, and then one, two, or three years later, it feels like a waste because they need to redo it anyway. Maybe they change their business name, their services, their messaging, or their aesthetic. A lot shifts early on.

Those first three years of business are similar to the first three years of a child’s life. You go from laying there, to sitting up, to crawling, to walking. Businesses grow and change in the same way, and a lot can happen in a short amount of time.

That’s why I think starting with a template makes more sense. Earlier in my career, before I sold website templates, I worked one-on-one with clients only. I didn’t have a template shop yet.

And this exact issue is what motivated me to create my templates and eventually start selling Showit templates. I had amazing women coming to me for their very first website. As my prices increased to $10,000, or more for custom websites, I’d often think, I really want to work with her, and she really wants to work with me. But I don’t think she needs to spend that much right now.

Some of these women were even willing to go into debt to get their first website. And as someone who also teaches business, my honest opinion was that this wasn’t the best business move.

One of the best things about service-based businesses is that they can be very low-cost to start and have low monthly expenses, while still having high profit margins. So going into debt for a website right out of the gate often doesn’t make sense.

That’s why I created my website templates with these business owners in mind. You’re new, you want to move from freelancing or side hustling into a legitimate business, and you want to spend less than $1,000 on your website. That’s where templates come in.

You don’t need the “super website” when you start. Most people don’t. But it is really nice to spend under $1,000 and still have a website that looks custom and professional through a template. And for some people, they continue using templates long-term, and that works beautifully. A lot of people do that.

Or maybe when you’re five years in, you hire a designer to revamp everything and get a completely custom website.

4. You Don’t Need To Have Your Website Copy And Branding Photos Ready

You don’t need to have every photo or every piece of website copy written before you start. This is something that often hangs people up. You’ll think, I need to get a photoshoot done. I need to write everything. I need to know exactly what I’m going to say on my website before I even begin.

But you can actually buy a website template first and then figure out your photos and copy after. What I’ve seen through my own customers is that the template can actually inform those decisions, rather than the other way around.

If you don’t have a super clear vision yet for your brand photos or overall style, it’s often easier to choose a template first. Then you can get brand photos done after you’ve purchased the template. The same goes for writing your copy. Once you see the layout and sections, it’s much easier to think, okay, this is what this About page includes, or these are the sections on the Services page. Now I know how to write copy for that.

So I actually think it’s a better decision to pick the template first and then do photos and copy afterward. It’s usually faster and more effective.

5. You Don’t Need a Giant Business Plan

You do not need a giant business plan with all of your goals and hopes for the next five or ten years before you have a website.

You might not consciously think this is a requirement, but a lot of people feel like their business just isn’t “there” enough yet to have a website. So let me be clear: you do not need a five-year business plan. You don’t need to know that you’re in this for the long haul.

You just need to know what you’re selling right now and have a little bit of money set aside to create your website. That’s it. Know what you’re selling, have a bit of money ready, set aside a little bit of time, get the website up, and then make that money back once you start booking clients or customers from your new site.

What You Need to Build Your First Website

Okay, now let’s talk about what you actually do need before you build your first website.

1. A Business Name And Offer

You need a name for your business. That can be your own name, like mine, or something like your name plus what you do, for example, Elizabeth Maccray Copywriting. For a long time, my business was called Elizabeth Maccray Designs, and now I mostly just use my name.

Your business name can also be a fictitious name, which is actually how I started. I had one fictitious name, then a few years later I rebranded to another fictitious name, and eventually I rebranded to my own name. Any of those options work.

You also need an offer, meaning something to sell. That could be a service like photography, a product like an online course, something online like coaching, or something in person like being a birth doula or a therapist.

Without a name and an offer, you won’t really have anything to put on your website yet. So those are the first things to figure out: what am I selling, and what am I calling this business?

Once you have those things figured out, you’re probably ready to start the journey of picking out a template.

2. A Domain Name

The next thing you need for your website is a domain name, which is your website address. You can think of this like your brick-and-mortar address. If you had a physical store, this would be the address people put into their maps app to find you. Online, your domain name is where people go to find you on the internet.

For example, my domain name is elizabethmccravy.com. In my ten years as a business owner, I’ve actually changed my business name three times, so I’ve had two other domains before this one. I share that to say, pick something that works for now. You can change your domain later if you need to. Is it a bit of a headache? Yes. But it’s doable, and it doesn’t have to be the thing you keep forever.

You can buy a domain name through places like GoDaddy. Domain names are usually much cheaper than what you’ll pay for your website template and your website platform, which we’ll talk about next.

Unless you’re buying something that’s extremely short or highly desirable, most domain names are pretty affordable. We’re usually talking around $30 a year. Something like your own name, like elizabethmccravy.com, is typically not expensive because it’s specific to you.

You do want your domain name to be short, memorable, and easy to spell and say. You also want to make sure that when it’s written out without spaces, it doesn’t accidentally spell other words that don’t make sense.

I also have a business naming guide on my website here if you want more advice about this. Inside, it talks more about naming your business and choosing a domain name, since those two things go hand in hand.

3. A Website Platform

The third thing you need for your website is a website platform. This is also sometimes called a website builder. Those two terms are interchangeable.

The platform I use, and that my templates work with, is called Showit. It’s very beginner-friendly, but also robust enough that large businesses earning millions of dollars still use it. It has a wide range of users, from people just starting out to very established companies.

It gives you a lot of creative freedom and it’s something you can update yourself, which is one of the many reasons I’m such a big Showit fan. I know the people who work there and build the product. They care deeply about excellence, customer support, and community. It really is one of the best platforms out there.

Head here if you want to learn more about Showit and get a one-month free trial with no credit card required, just to explore the interface and see what I’m talking about.

4. A Template Or A Custom Design

You either need a template that you can customize yourself, or you need to hire a designer to custom build a website from scratch.

I’ve already shared why I don’t recommend a fully custom website for most brand-new businesses. There are always exceptions, but if you’re not a designer yourself, you’ll need one of these two options.

What you don’t want to do is start with a blank screen and try to build everything from scratch on your own. That usually takes forever and becomes overwhelming. You need a starting point, either through a template or through a designer.

5. Website Hosting

And the fifth thing you need is website hosting. Website hosting is the tool or company that actually puts your website out on the internet.

We use hosts for lots of things. Podcasts have hosts, for example. If you’re a podcaster, your host is what gets your show onto platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. My podcast host is Buzzsprout. Buzzsprout is what makes this episode available for you to listen to.

Sometimes the website builder and the host are two separate things, and sometimes they’re the same. In the case of Showit, your website builder and your website host are bundled together, which makes things much simpler.

In the case of WordPress, for example, the host and the builder are not the same.

A Rapid First Glossary Of Words You’ll Come Across As You Build Your First Website

Okay, now let’s do a rapid-fire glossary of the words you’ll hear when you build your first website. Even as a designer, I wish I’d had something like this when I was starting out.

Website template (sometimes called a website theme): A website template or theme is essentially the bones of your website. It’s designed and ready, and you just add your words and images. It’s a base you build on, and you can customize it as much or as little as you want. These terms are interchangeable. “Theme” is more commonly used in the WordPress world, which is another website builder. “Template” is more commonly used with platforms like Wix, Squarespace, or Showit

Domain/domain name: Like I mentioned earlier, this is your website’s street address, for example, elizabethmccravy.com. You buy this through places like GoDaddy. Your domain name is where the website you design gets pointed to.

Hosting: A website host stores your website’s content, things like text and images, on powerful computers called web servers. Hosting also maintains the site and makes sure it’s secure and available to visitors. Showit is a website platform that also includes hosting, which is really nice because everything is wrapped into one place. So when you hear the term “hosting,” that’s what it means. It’s the behind-the-scenes system making your website accessible online.

Website platform (also called a website builder): Just like template versus theme, platform and builder are interchangeable terms. This is the tool you use to actually build your website. Examples of website platforms include Showit, Squarespace, WordPress, Wix, Shopify, and Kajabi. Kajabi is a good example because it includes a website builder, but it also hosts online courses and handles email marketing. Some platforms do multiple things, while others, like Showit, are more focused specifically on the website itself.

SEO: This stands for search engine optimization. SEO is how Google, ChatGPT, and other search engines find your website. And to be specific, SEO isn’t something you buy, it’s something you do. When you hear the word “optimize,” that’s exactly what it means. You’re optimizing your website to be found in search results for the things people are looking for.

Full site template: This is a Showit-specific term. A full site template means it includes your entire main website: homepage, About page, Services page, Contact page, blog, and more. You can always add pages, and you can also delete pages you don’t need. For example, if a template includes a blog or resources page and you don’t plan to use those, you can remove them. A full site template is meant to be the foundation for your entire website.

Add-on template: An add-on template is made up of pages or canvases that you add onto an existing website, rather than replacing the whole thing. This is not going to be your whole site. It’s pages you add onto a template or custom design you already have.

Here are some examples:

  • Speaker page template: if you’re trying to book more speaking gigs and want a media kit on your website, you can buy that template, customize it, and add it to your main site.
  • Timeline template: this is made up of canvases, meaning sections of a website page, that you add onto your Showit template. It lets you share your story or your service process in a unique way through a really intentional design.
  • Podcast page: that’s a page on your website dedicated to information about your podcast. Maybe your full site template doesn’t include a podcast page design, so you buy an add-on to include that.

Add-on templates aren’t necessary. They’re an extra option, not something you need to start with. What you do want to start with is a full site template.

So there you go - those are your glossary terms. There are probably a few I could add that I’m forgetting, but this is a really good starting point to help you understand the language around websites.

Step-by-Step For How To Build Your First Website

Now let’s get into the step-by-step of how to build your first website. I’ve got five steps that outline what to actually do. I’ll also say that if you’re using a different website platform than Showit, these steps might look a little different. I’m specifically sharing how to build your first website in Showit.

1. Choose Your Website Platform

Step one is choosing your platform. Again, I recommend Showit as a first platform, but the most important thing here is just picking something and starting. Don’t get stuck in decision overwhelm.

I’ve actually changed my website platform three times. My very first website, back when I was freelancing in college, was on Squarespace. After that, I built websites on WordPress. And now I’ve been on Showit for many, many years. So just know that you can change platforms later.

One thing I do want to clarify, because this comes up a lot, is that changing platforms does mean redoing your design. You can’t design a website on Showit and then simply upload it to Squarespace. You would need to recreate the design within that new platform.

But again, the key thing here is to just pick a platform and start. For service-based businesses, online courses, templates, and things like that, my recommendation is Showit. You can learn more about Showit here and you can get a one-month free trial with no credit card required by using the code ELIZABETH when you sign up.

You can also check out my Showit website templates here!

2. Pick a Template That Fits Your Brand

Step two is picking a template that fits your brand. A website template saves time, stress, and money. If you’re DIYing your website, you do not want to skip this step.

Like I mentioned earlier, as a non-designer, you don’t want to start with a blank screen and think, okay, let me drag in a button, place a photo here, adjust this spacing. That process takes forever if you’re not a designer.

As a designer, that’s literally what I do for fun. That’s what I’m doing when I create templates. I’m starting with a blank screen and designing something for you. But that’s not what you want to be doing yourself.

A website template puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to updates. If you need to change your pricing, you can do that yourself. If you want to add a new service, you can duplicate a page and create a new info page for that service.

Maybe you launch your website using photos a friend took of you, and later you do a professional brand photoshoot. You can easily go into your template and swap out all of your images. Showit makes this really simple, and that flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of starting with a template.

That flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of using a template. It really puts you in control. So to start, you pick your platform and then you pick your template.

For your main website, you’ll want what’s called a full site template, not an add-on, like I explained earlier in the glossary section. A full site template gives you everything you need to launch your website.

And if you’re enjoying this episode, I highly recommend checking out my templates here! I have a lot to choose from.

I have templates for photographers and videographers, wedding professionals, coaches, therapists, lactation consultants, birth doulas or midwives, copywriters, bookkeepers, podcasters, course creators, and YouTubers. When you’re choosing a template, I recommend picking one based on the design, layout, and overall vibe that resonates with you. That matters more than the industry label.

There’s a wide range of styles too, from sophisticated and modern to fun and colorful. There really is something for everyone in the shop.

I also have a website personality quiz that matches you with a group of templates based on your brand personality. If you’re looking at the options and thinking, I don’t know which one is right for my ideal client or my business, you can go here and take that quiz. When you take the quiz, you also get a discount and some free Canva templates for your social media.

3. Customize Your Site

At this point, you’ve picked your platform and your template, and now you make it your own.

You customize your site by adding your brand colors, fonts, website copy, and photos. Sometimes people keep the template’s original fonts and colors, which is the fastest and easiest option. Other times, they change everything.

What I see most often is a mix. Maybe you keep most of the colors but swap out a font, or you keep the fonts and change the colors. There’s a lot of flexibility here.

The template you purchase includes placeholder content, so it’s meant for you to replace the words and images. That means swapping out photos of models or stock images for photos of you, your work, or your products, and updating the copy so it reflects your business.

My templates also come with my Showit Blueprint Course. It walks you through how to use Showit step by step. You don’t have to watch the entire course to customize your site, but I do recommend watching the first few videos so you understand the interface.

Showit itself also has great resources to help you learn the platform.

4. Connect Your Domain And Launch Your Website

Step four is connecting your domain name and going live. Your website does not have to be perfect before you do this.

Showit has clear tutorials on how to connect your domain, so I won’t go deep into the technical details. But essentially, you’re telling your domain provider, wherever you bought your domain, that the website you built in Showit is what should appear when someone types in your domain name into their browser.

That’s what it means to connect your domain and go live.

Once you do this, your website is live on the internet. It’s launched, which is such a fun and exciting moment. Now you can share the link with people. It can show up in Google search. You can share it on Instagram, add it to your Stories, and send it directly to potential clients. It’s a real link, out there on the internet, connected and working.

5. Start Sharing Your New Website

That brings us to the fifth and final step, which is to start sharing it. Add your website to your social media bio. Put it in your email signature. Do that launch post where you say, “Hey, I’m officially in business. Here’s my website. Come check it out.” You can promote it as a way to book clients or sell your offers. At this point, it’s yours to share.

I also want to say this about this step: you can continue tweaking and updating your website after it’s live. You don’t need it to be perfect before you launch.

Maybe you get your site to a solid baseline where you think, this is good enough to go live. Sure, you might want to add a blog later, or a resources page, or email marketing opt-ins down the road. But for now, it works. Launch it with what you have and keep improving it as you go.

With Showit, making updates is very simple. You just log into your Showit account, open the website builder, make your changes, and click publish again. As soon as you do that, the updates go live.

So when I say that step four is connecting your domain and going live, that doesn’t mean you’re locked into that version forever. You can make changes as often as you want, even multiple times a day if you need to. You’re fully in control, and changes take effect immediately when you publish.

You can add new pages over time, purchase add-on templates whenever you want, and those add-ons can come from any shop. They don’t have to be from the same designer you bought your main template from. That’s a question I get a lot, so I just want to note that here.

And from there, you start sharing your website and making money from it.

Parker may possibly be the most extroverted person you have met in life. You can actually see him getting more powerful and energetic as an event is going on, as the introverts in the room start checking their watches and try to slip out unnoticed. Parker loves the opportunity to meet people from all over the world - through websites. If you have been to a conference that Showit happens to be sponsoring, chances are you have seen Parker there. Parker loves websites so much that he even started a side gig about websites with his good friend and co-worker, Trevor Elcock. When he is not talking about websites, he is golfing or trying to plan a golf outing, or he's hanging out with friends because - that's what extroverts do.

Now, let’s jump into this amazing interview!

Parker Pearson from Showit customer support team

What did Showit look like when you started 6 years ago? What do you love most about working for Showit customer support?

When I got hired at Showit, I believe I was the 15th or 16th person to join the team. Back then, we worked out of Todd's backyard in a cozy guest house. Showit had its humble beginnings there, in a small space of around 800 square feet. Our support team operated from that room, with a few adjacent rooms accommodating the rest of us. It's incredible to look back now and see how far we've come. We've moved beyond the backyard, and you've probably seen our office building. We often joke about being a "real" business now, with a dedicated workspace instead of parking in dirt and walking into someone's home.

We’ve grown so much but I still remember being brand new at 21 not knowing anything or anyone and feeling like you are part of the family (and that family feel still exists today!).

What do you love most about Showit compared to other website builders?

So many reasons! When I joined Showit, we tested out various website hosting options to evaluate customer support and learn better how to differentiate ourselves as a company and we’ve really leaned into that. A few of my favorite features are:

  • Our support team consists of 18 or 17 dedicated REAL people, serving over 35,000 users. We genuinely want to help you succeed and grow your business, whether it's a side hobby or a full-time venture
  • Showit’s interface is user-friendly and straightforward, similar to Canva or PowerPoint.
  • You can create a beautiful website pretty quickly with website templates
  • While you can put up a simple website fairly quickly, you can also take your time and customize every aspect of it. Showit really gives you the freedom to design your website to stand out in your industry.

What would you say is the number one question that you guys get asked as Showit customer support?

Oh boy. I'd say the number one thing is, what is DNS? Or to follow up, what is a domain registrar to me? Obviously, as a designer, it's a no-brainer, but for some people, it can be overwhelming. And that's totally okay.

DNS stands for Domain Name System, which is what connects your domain to our servers. To do that, you'll need the correct IP addresses and your domain registrar comes into play here. You can purchase your domain from Google Domains, GoDaddy, Squarespace, Wix, Blue Host, and many others.

This is the most common concern I see because it can be daunting to change things, especially when it comes to taking your website online or offline. In most cases, your domain registrar can set up the necessary configurations for you. Our team will provide you with a list of where to point your domain, and you can simply ask your registrar to set it up.

If you want confirmation, you can send a screenshot from your registrar to our support team for verification too!

What’s a day in the life at Showit customer support?

It varies depending on the season. At the time of recording it was the beginning of the year, which is our busiest season. With kids back in school and businesses ramping up, it's a hectic time. Different fields of work also have their busy seasons but in general we find from January through April, to be the busiest for Showit customer support.

Our team starts each day at 8:00 AM Arizona time (there are eighteen of us right now!). We all have individual queues and a chat system to handle incoming messages. We prioritize older messages to ensure we assist those who have been waiting longer. We answer questions, provide articles, and share Loom videos and screenshots. Our goal is always to clear the backlog and assist everyone efficiently everyday.

On top of that, each team member specializes in different areas within support, such as domains, DNS setup, blog setup, etc. I personally focus on conference support and one-on-one video calls. We all contribute to the “support” umbrella, but we each have our unique expertise as well.

What can we as business owners do to get better answers/solutions from Showit customer support?

Yeah, for our team, screenshots really help. If you're having an issue with a specific page, providing the page name, canvas, and including a screenshot would prompt a quicker response. It saves time going back and forth asking for details. It allows us to assist you faster and fix any live-site issues before or during the launch. Loom videos are also helpful. Any specifics about the issue you provide will make it easier for our team - the more specific the better!

At what point are we relying on Showit customer support a little too much and we should be hiring a designer or paying for tech support instead?

It does vary person to person but what I will say is this: we provide different articles and loom videos to guide you, but if you need extensive assistance and want someone to hold your hand, it's a good idea to consider hiring a designer. You can check our designer page for people who offer that service or consider joining our free Facebook user group, where you can share website previews and ask for advice. There are knowledgeable people in the group who would be happy to help you!

How do Showit and WordPress work together for blogging?

There are two main aspects to consider when it comes to your blog: design and content.

The design aspect includes fonts, text, layout, spacing, and coloring. You can customize this within your Showit blog template pages. These pages include your blog page, which serves as the home page for your blog, and your single post page, which represents the design for individual blog posts. It's important to keep these pages because they are crucial to your overall design. If they are accidentally deleted, don't worry! We're here to help you set them up again, ensuring your site can be published.

On the other hand, there's the WordPress side of blogging, which is all about creating your posts and adding content and images. Please don’t create the actual posts in Showit because you will likely have to move them later!

What would you say is the biggest hurdle people have with the blogging side?

Many want to dive right into designing their templates, and that's totally fine. Whether you're using a free, purchasable, or premium design, your blog template pages are good to go. You don't need to edit or change them unless you want to modify the font, text styles, or colors. But if you're happy with the overall layout, there's no need to make any changes. Sometimes people tinker with everything, which can lead to things breaking. That’s when you contact Showit customer support and we'll be honest and let you know if something isn't properly configured.

If you're content with the template and layout you've chosen, it's ready to be connected to WordPress. At Showit customer support, we've taken care of the setup for you, making it super easy to create your blog posts in WordPress. And if you're on the basic subscription, our blog team can set you up with a new blog, or we can migrate content from platforms like Squarespace, WordPress.com, or WordPress.org with our advanced subscription.

On top of that, many people get confused when editing their Showit pages and the preview doesn't reflect the changes made to their blog pages. The preview feature only shows static content and won't pull anything from WordPress. To see updated changes on your blog, you'll need to visit the live blog page where you can view your actual titles, texts, and other elements. So don't worry if the preview doesn't update your WordPress content!

web design course review

What would you say is the number one hangup you see people face when they're trying to bring it live? What advice do you have for someone about to launch their new website?

Being in this industry for a while, I've noticed that many people get caught up in striving for perfection before launching their site. But here's the thing: in my opinion at least, you don't need to stress over every little detail. As long as your friends and family have given it a once-over and haven't found any grammar errors or broken links, you're good to go. You can even share a preview with our Facebook group to get more feedback. Remember, you can always make changes to your site later on. Don't let the fear of imperfection delay your progress. Launch your site, embrace the learning process, and know that not every day needs to be flawless. It's okay to learn as you go. So, take that step, get your business and website up and running, and remember that progress is more important than perfection.

EM: I would add - don’t make your “launch date” your “live date”. Make your website live a few days before so you can test everything well in advance of announcing your new website to the world.

Totally agree! And to add to that - avoid launching on weekends. Our team is primarily available Monday to Friday, with only a few part-time members working on weekends. Since our entire team is not present on weekends, it may cause delays in addressing any issues like wrong DNS settings or other potential hiccups. We recommend launching from Monday to Thursday, or simply Monday to Friday, when our entire team is available every day.

Any cool new Showit features coming soon that you can share?

As Showit customer support, I’m not involved in development or marketing but there are a few things that have come out recently that I think are really cool.

We recently introduced grid lines for better alignment options, which are WAY better than what we had before. We also introduced social grids, so that you can easily connect your Instagram accounts and display multiple feeds within your Show at account. This is a great alternative to using Snapwidget or something like that for embedding Instagram on your website.

We also keep track of what our customers are asking for and try really hard to understand their wants and needs. When I first joined, our development team consisted of just one person - which, in the grand scheme of things, was quite crazy. But now we have a large development team with over 13 members downstairs. We are addressing different pain points and making updates behind the scenes, especially when it comes to security. Ensuring the security of your account and privacy is our top priority. Additionally, we are working on integrating different design features from other website hosts. If you have any specific requests or suggestions, please let us at Showit customer support know. We really do keep track of all the requests and prioritize them based on demand. The more requests we receive, the higher priority we assign them for app updates.

Rapid Fire Questions with Parker Pearson from Showit Customer Support

What's your most unpopular opinion about websites?

Keep it simple. I think a lot of people try and make this gigantic, grandiose, over the top really intricate website and to each their own, but if you keep it simple and you keep your message really simple and dialed into who you're trying to convey your business to, I feel like from what I've seen over the years, 9 times out of 10, that works way better than trying to make your site super complicated with 20 different pages and a bunch of different links throughout. That might just be my opinion though!

If our listeners lived in the same city as you and your extroverted self, where would we be most likely to run into you in real life?

I love playing sports, especially pickleball. We recently had a fun tournament with the entire staff. If you're at a pickleball court, you might see me there. I also enjoy spending time at coffee shops in downtown Phoenix or Gilbert. And of course, I can't resist sushi, so you might find me at pretty much every sushi spot in the Phoenix area every few weeks.

What book have you read recently that you’d recommend?

I'm not a big reader, but our Showit customer support team started a Book Club. Every month or so, we pick a book to read together and grow as individuals. We recently read Dare to Lead by Brene Brown, and I actually enjoyed it. It was impactful to see different leadership styles and embrace vulnerability within our team. Even though I'm not naturally an entrepreneur, exploring these topics and supporting each other's growth has been valuable.

Where can we connect with Parker Pearson at Showit customer support?

I’ve been using Showit for years now, and navigating the software is like second nature to me. In fact, I have had many dreams where I am literally designing websites on Showit (this always tends to happen to me when I’m deep into a client project or working on a new template). At this point, I’m an established Showit design partner (I was honored as a top Showit designer in 2020!) and I have had over 1,300 websites go through Showit’s system that was either custom-designed by me directly or with one of my Showit templates. So, you could say I know a thing or two about Showit. Today, I’m sharing my top three Showit design hacks for designing custom websites or templates on Showit, so if you are a website designer, you’ll want to tune in today!

Before I share my favorite Showit design hacks, I want to invite you to join me (virtually!) at the Thrive Summit happening on March 13-15, 2023. I have to be honest with you: I have been asked to speak at summits many, many times. This is the first one I’ve ever said yes to. And I said yes for a REASON.

Elizabeth McCravy shares Showit Design Hacks

Thrive Summit is a free 3-day event featuring 16 experts (I’m one of them!) who will help you improve your current technical skills and help take your design portfolio to the next level.  They are going to be presenting on topics like: wireframing websites with ease, designing a timeless logo, and taking a deep dive into color, typography, and brand strategy. Additionally, there are presentations on Shopify, Squarespace, and Figma/XD if you’re interested in any of those software options specifically!

To my knowledge, it is the ONLY summit available that covers the strategy, design, the creative process AND includes feedback and support to help you implement what you learn. You’ll want to be there!

And spoiler alert, I’m going to be sharing all about how to design a Showit website that WOWs. And it is SO good. You’ll also get a really incredible Clickup template bonus when you come to watch my presentation.

TL; DR: This free summit is going to be amazing. I am excited to watch all the presentations and learn myself too! Grab your free ticket here!

While the event is free, you may want to consider snagging The Creator Pass for $97. Not only does it include lifetime access to the presentations AND full access to Live “In Action” Sessions, but it also includes over $1400 worth of premium resources from each presenter (including my Profit Sheet!).

Now, let’s get back to the three Showit Design Hacks I promised you in the episode!

Showit Design Hack #1: Don’t build every canvas from scratch.

This hack applies to Showit website template design and custom design but it DOES have some caveats (so don’t keep scrolling!). What I am saying is: you can use other things you’ve already built as bases for new projects. You can still make the custom website you are designing for your client completely and uniquely theirs without starting from scratch everytime. Because of how technical you can get with Showit, this is one of those Showit design hacks that can be a REAL time saver.

Just a quick note for new Showit website designers

For websites you’re building as designers, you need to start with one of Showit’s starter templates that are licensed to be used for that purpose. In case you are new to Showit, one of those canvases is literally nothingness, which is what I prefer. And then there are two other options that have some structure to them!

Don’t start with templates you purchased from another designer to build your template. Don’t start with someone else’s template for a custom site that wasn’t purchased as a customization for that client.

Looking for the designer starter templates? Find them here!

5 things I never design from scratch on Showit:

  1. Buttons - I actually have a lot to say about creating buttons on Showit, but we will get to that next!
  2. Menus - Whether it’s across the top or a hamburger menu, I start with a menu that I’ve already created as a base
  3. Footers - I have a few different footer options in my canvas library that I will usually use as my starting point
  4. Contact forms - Showit contact forms do NOT need to be built from scratch every time.
  5. Blog pages - If you’ve ever designed a website in Showit, you know this one here. There are so many technical things on a blog page, it’s great to have a starting point where everything is linked correctly and then design from there.

Are you thinking about launching a template shop?

Here is a BIG caveat - if you’re building a template NEVER use other people’s templates as a starting point. I know as designers it’s common for us to have offered template customization previously, so maybe you have a template designed by another designer in your Showit library. Do not use that as a base for anything outside of the project it was purchased for. That’s likely against the terms of the template use and will get you in trouble.

This is not exclusive to template shop owners either. If you’re building a client site, you should not be using someone else’s template as a base.

Read more: The 3 Biggest Myths about Starting a Brand and Website Design Business

So what can you use as a base if you are a Showit website designer?

While you can’t use other people’s templates as a base, here are a few things you can use as a base for future templates and custom website projects:

  • Your own templates
  • Your own past client projects
  • You can even create YOURSELF a starter template that you use for your own projects internally.

If you’re just getting started, don’t get discouraged here. You may have nothing to use as a base yet. That’s ok! You’ll build it up. As you grow with Showit, just make sure that you don’t try to recreate the wheel on everything every time. Just like how we designers use canned emails for messaging our clients (and then customize that message to their particular need), we can do that with our web designs.

3 Showit Design Hacks you should know

Showit Design Hack #2: How To Make Buttons in Showit (Easily + Effectively)

Over the past 2 years, I have changed how I make buttons in Showit, and this new way is SO MUCH BETTER!

Originally, I would make a square button and then add a little strip of text across it. Is that what you are doing too? The biggest problem with this, is that then you need to link both the square and the text because someone’s mouse could hover over either and try to click.

This is kind of tedious, but it’s usually fine for us designers (because we are used to triple checking the details, right?).

But for clients who want to maintain their site (easily) and for our template shop, it becomes more of an issue. We don’t want things to be unnecessarily hard for them!

Y’all - I have FOUND a solution…

How I make buttons in Showit:

  1. Take the text box and make it the entire height and width of the button.
  2. Adjust the line height to be alot higher so that the text centers on that larger box.
  3. Now, the button itself (the rectangle) doesn’t need to be linked to anything. And the text is the only link that needs to be changed!
  4. Don’t forget to adjust it on mobile too!

Not only does this look better, it is easier to edit long term for your clients. This is one of my favorite Showit design hacks for buttons!

Showit Design Hack #3: Design Mobile While You Do The Desktop.

In case you are unfamiliar to Showit, the mobile view and desktop view need to be designed separately. Usually you will use the same “objects”, but you can put them in different places, hide some on one view and not the other, do different colors/font, etc. It’s awesome. The fact that you can customize the mobile version of your website COMPLETELY is easily one of my favorite things about using Showit as a website platform.

My Showit Design Hack for you is this: stop abandoning mobile to focus on the desktop. I see too many designers do this because it’s “easier” and can feel faster in the moment, but then when you have to go back through an entire page at once to fix the mobile site… it’s a MESS.

Showit design hacks

In my opinion as a designer, it’s better to go little by little instead. Adjust a button (for example) on desktop and then immediately adjust it on mobile. Now you have a great looking button that you can copy over to other canvases and pages too!

To be fair, Showit is trying to make this easier and has recently added some features where mobile settings carry over better! But it’s still alot of work to constantly go between the 2 versions. However, in the meantime, designing both the mobile and desktop “little by little” will ultimately help you create a cleaner website overall!

The way your website looks on mobile matters

When you try to do the mobile version all at once, it’s easier to rush through it and make mistakes. Plus, focusing only on desktop is like you saying that the mobile site doesn’t matter, when in reality - you or your client likely have the same if not more people seeing the mobile view.

As designers, we love desktop. But in real life, people are visiting websites on phones. In my own business, 35% of my users in the last 30 days were on their phone. That’s my site, but overall statistics show that 54.8% of all internet traffic came from mobile devices in 2021. Do not ignore the mobile version (it truly is one of the best reasons to use Showit). I want to encourage you to stretch yourself and grow as a designer by always asking: how can I make the mobile experience even better?

Answering FAQs about EM Shop and Showit website templates on the Breakthrough Brand Podcast, part 2.

1. Do your templates integrate with (fill in the blank software)?

You are more than likely coming to your website with other tools you currently use or want to be using in your business and wondering if they will work with these Showit templates. So do they work?

The answer is usually yes. If it is something you would embed into a site, then it should work!

If you won’t be “embedding” it, you likely can still use it with Showit

Here are just a few of the common ones I’m asked about that all work great with Showit:

If you have an online course on a platform like Kajabi or Teachable, you can link out to that directly from your website! You will also be able to link out to your social media, embed episode players with podcasting software, add countdown timers like Deadline Funnel or Powr.io, and even sales counters!

You can use Google Analytics with Showit and any of these templates

If you are curious if your software integrates with Showit, send an email to hello@elizabethmccravy.com and we will be happy to help you figure it out!

2. I am struggling with which template to pick, I really love X one but also Y one! How do I pick?

This is probably the most common question we get! So if this is you, know you are not alone if you struggle with which template to go with.

My 3 tips for picking your template:

  • Take the website personality quiz! It matches you with suggestions based on your answers. People say it’s super accurate!
  • Focus on the layout more than the colors and the business it’s modeled for. For example, you might be a photographer, but you really love a template that is modeled for a coach. That does not mean that template can’t be a good fit for you! It still has what you need as a photographer. It’s just a different layout and vibe with different fonts! Focus on the layouts you like best. Everything is editable, but the actual positioning of everything is something you probably won’t want to edit too much.
  • Think about your own content in the template and which one feels like a better fit for you? I would try to visualize your business in it! Remind yourself that it is all customizable so if there are tiny things you don’t love but the rest of the template you’re obsessed with, that is probably an easy fix.

If you love the color palette of one template, but the layout of another, email us and we can tell you the palette you like and you can just add it into the template you like the layout of better.

I know these decisions are hard, but I recommend going with your gut.

3. Who are your templates not right for?

In most cases, if you really love them and they resonate with you, then they’re right for you! But I will say one major factor that would make my templates not a good fit is if you are strictly an e-commerce business.

Showit does not have any built-in e-commerce. That doesn’t mean you can’t sell things with a Showit website. I am able to run my template shop all on my Showit website, so you can sell things with these templates and so many of my customers do this as well.

But if you sell a lot of items that need to change out often and be categorized in very specific ways, then something like Shopify will be better for you.

If you don’t have a ton of products and want to use Showit and still need shopping cart functionality, Shopify Lite is perfect for you to add to your site!

If you sell something like a membership program or online courses, you can use the built-in cart software from the hosting platform.

ThriveCart is what I use and I love it! That is another great option.

5. What happens if I run into an issue and can’t figure something out?

You are not on this journey alone!

My team and I are here to help you when it comes to getting support. This is not true of all template shops. You can email us anytime with your questions. Our response time is typically quick and we'll even log into your account to help you problem solve!

You also get access to our signature course, The Showit Blueprint.

This course is worth the price of the template on its OWN! (We hear this all the time in our reviews and feedback!)

This course is an easy to follow format that teaches you how to use Showit. The videos are short, high quality, and to the point. (Watch a video tour of the course here!)

In addition to both of those things...

Showit also offers customer support.

You can chat with them from within your Showit account that is really great! They have a vast library of "help docs" that answer common questions. (See here!)

There is also a Showit User Facebook group that can be helpful as well for crowd-sourcing community replies!

6. How is the SEO game with your templates?

SEO stands for search engine optimization and is really important. Not a lot of people realize this, but your actual website design affects your SEO in 2 ways:

  1. If it’s not well designed and intuitive, people will leave quickly which hurts your SEO. Google will think you aren’t answering the search question, so they will show you to fewer people.
  2. The backend structure of your website matters for SEO. Specifically the heading tags. In Showit this is under your text properties settings. This isn’t the most important SEO thing, but if your site has things that are not important set up as certain heading tags, then it is going to be harder for search engines to show your stuff to the right people.

I set up my templates properly for both of those, which is not true of all template shops. I also include a few training videos on SEO with your purchase in the Showit Blueprint Course. There is one for blogging SEO and one for SEO on all of your standard pages.

I have had plenty of customers rank super high (if not first) for their ideal searches with my templates.

Some people worry their SEO will take a hit when they switch platforms, and it’s hard to say whether or not that will be true because it is so nuanced.
